How to Find Dresses That Fit in 2X to 4X
Measure once, read size charts the right way, and stop guessing.
2 min readShopping for dresses online in plus sizes can feel like a gamble. A few minutes with a tape measure and a size chart makes it much easier.
Sizes are not the same everywhere
A 2X at one store can fit like a 3X at another. Letter sizes are a starting point. Your measurements are the real answer.
As a very rough guide, plus letter sizes often line up like this, but always check each store's chart:
- 1X: about 14 to 16
- 2X: about 18 to 20
- 3X: about 22 to 24
- 4X: about 26 to 28
Measure yourself once
Use a soft tape measure and keep it snug, not tight.
- Bust: around the fullest part.
- Waist: around your natural waist, usually the narrowest point.
- Hips: around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Write them down and keep them on your phone.
Read the size chart the right way
- Check whether the chart shows body measurements or garment measurements.
- If you fall between sizes, size for your largest measurement, then tailor if needed.
- Stretch fabrics (jersey, spandex blends) give you room. Woven fabrics (satin, linen, cotton poplin) do not.
Read the product details
- Look at the fabric list. Some stretch (2 to 5 percent spandex) helps fitted dresses.
- Check the length and where the model's measurements are listed, if shown.
- Read reviews for "runs small" or "runs large" notes.
Shapes that fit more bodies
- Wrap dresses adjust at the waist.
- A-line skirts give room through the hips.
- Smocked or elastic backs give flexibility in the bust and waist.
Before you buy
- Check the return policy and who pays return shipping.
- Order two sizes if returns are free, then send one back.
- Keep tags on until you have tried it at home.
Quick checklist
- Know your bust, waist, and hip numbers
- Body vs garment chart?
- Stretch or no stretch?
- Free returns?
